A high school basketball player, rounds of dry needling, exercises for the swelling — and still in pain. So we asked a different question: what's driving the swelling in the first place?

In this video I walk through how I look at knee pain as a whole-body problem. Gait shows us how much shock is traveling up the leg. Squat mechanics showed one knee taking far more compressive force than the other. And his history — a fall on the tailbone, old shoulder and clavicle injuries, tight through the chest, sitting all day — explained why. When one area stops moving well, the body finds movement somewhere else. For him, that was the pelvis, the quads taking over, and strain landing on the low back and knees.

Complex, but not complicated. Every person's structure and injury history is different, but the patterns repeat — and recognizing them is what lets us find the real driver instead of chasing the pain.

Knee Pain in Young Athletes: Looking Beyond the Joint

A dad at my son's baseball game asked me a question I hear constantly: "Jen, my legs are tight all the time — quads, calves. What do I do?"

My first questions weren't about his legs. Where exactly? Worse in the morning or at night? He said morning — and that told me the answer wasn't in his quads. It was in his back and pelvis.

Then I watched him walk. He couldn't get through his pelvis, so all that rotational force was landing in his low back. Enough strain to irritate a disc, enough swelling to press on the nerves — and nerves don't like pressure. So they talk. All the way down the leg.

Here's the principle: your body keeps moving whether or not it's moving well. Where you don't move, somewhere else takes force it was never designed to absorb. That's why the spot that hurts is usually the compensation, not the cause — and why rolling out your tight legs only buys temporary relief.

Back pain in kids and teens isn't a mystery — and it isn't something they'll just grow out of.

I saw a college tennis player this morning with so much rotation through her low back it made mine hurt to watch. If she doesn't restore the areas that aren't moving, back pain is coming.

Here's why: our kids sit all day in class, slump over phones, and drive — then go play their sport. When the upper back and hip flexors get tight, the body has to find movement somewhere else. That somewhere is almost always the neck or the low back — areas never designed to absorb that much force. Over time it shows up in the joints, discs, and nerves.

My Teen Could Only Drive an Hour Without Cramping — Here's What Fixed It

Numbness on the top of your foot or the ball of your foot? Most people head straight to the podiatrist — and yes, we should rule out things like diabetic neuropathy. But very rarely is the numb spot the actual problem.

In this video, I walk through a patient case where every sign pointed back to her lumbar spine — even though her back didn't hurt at all. I explain what excessive motion at the spine can do to nearby nerves, why "no back pain" doesn't mean "no back problem," and how inflammation plays into nerve health too.

I also share what's going on in my own body right now — a chirping hamstring and a little foot numbness of my own after a long road trip, less movement, and a weekend of more inflammatory foods. Same story, different scale.

The takeaway: symptoms rarely show up where the real problem lives. To actually resolve them, we have to look at the whole person — structural, functional, cellular, and nervous system — not just the spot that hurts (or in this case, doesn't).
