JEN’S VIDEO JOURNAL

For over 26 years, I've worked with patients facing the most complex health challenges — using advanced hands-on techniques in visceral, vascular, and neural manipulation. But over time, I discovered something important: my hands can only take a patient so far.

The real, lasting change happens when patients understand their own bodies — what helps, what hurts, and how to track the difference. That's the idea behind Foundations in Functional Health, the required first step for every patient at the Shepherd Center for Integrative Health.

In this video, I introduce myself and explain why we start here — before any advanced treatment begins.

Meet Jennifer Shepherd MSPT, CFMT, FFMT, FAAOMPT, IFMCP | Why Your Body Needs More Than "Fixing"
Welcome to The Shepherd Center For Integrative Health
Back pain in kids and teens isn't random — it's often the body compensating for stiffness somewhere else. In this video, I break down why sitting all day, phones, and sports create tightness in the hips and upper back that eventually overloads the low back — and why catching it early changes the trajectory of your child's spine health for life.

I'll walk through:

Why the low back and neck are usually where compensation shows up first
How tight hip flexors and a forward-slumped posture set kids up for pain
Why "just strengthen the core" advice often backfires
What actually needs to happen first: restoring mobility before building stability

If your child plays sports, sits for hours at school, or you've noticed them moving a little "off," this one's for you.

Why Your Teen's Back Pain Isn't Random (And How to Stop It)
My teenage athlete could only drive an hour before brutal hamstring cramps hit. Not dehydration — his lumbar spine.

With a 7-hour road trip ahead, I set him up right: pelvis positioning first, then a lumbar roll on top. Result? 2.5 hours out, 4 hours home.

The pelvis and lumbar spine drive what happens all the way down the leg. When the spine's compressed, the nerves feeding your hamstrings pay for it.

Curious what's behind your own aches or cramps? https://www.tscfih.com

My Teen Could Only Drive an Hour Without Cramping — Here's What Fixed It
Numbness on the top of your foot or the ball of your foot? Most people head straight to the podiatrist — and yes, we should rule out things like diabetic neuropathy. But very rarely is the numb spot the actual problem.

In this video, I walk through a patient case where every sign pointed back to her lumbar spine — even though her back didn't hurt at all. I explain what excessive motion at the spine can do to nearby nerves, why "no back pain" doesn't mean "no back problem," and how inflammation plays into nerve health too.

I also share what's going on in my own body right now — a chirping hamstring and a little foot numbness of my own after a long road trip, less movement, and a weekend of more inflammatory foods. Same story, different scale.

The takeaway: symptoms rarely show up where the real problem lives. To actually resolve them, we have to look at the whole person — structural, functional, cellular, and nervous system — not just the spot that hurts (or in this case, doesn't).

Why That Numbness in Your Foot Might Actually Be Your Back
Sometimes falling off the wellness bandwagon is a big crash — a rough weekend, a rough week — and it's obvious. But the harder kind of slide happens gradually, food by food, week by week, until you realize you're dealing with subclinical inflammation that won't even show up in your labs.

In this video, I'm getting real about where I'm at right now: the foods that quietly crept back in, the subtle signs my body is giving me (off GI, off mood, off skin, off energy), and why willpower alone isn't the answer — even for a practitioner who knows better.

If you've ever said "I'll start Monday" more times than you'd like to admit — this one's for you. We're in this together.

Confession: I've Been Slowly Sliding Off the Wagon
Are you juggling 30 supplements, elimination diets, and a growing list of practitioner advice — yet still not feeling better? You might be missing the most important piece of all: your own body's signals.

In this video, we explore why so much of modern health care — even holistic and functional medicine — is still practitioner-driven, and how that can leave us overwhelmed and disconnected from what our bodies are actually asking for.

We dive into:

Why accumulating health advice can overload your nervous system.
The critical role of the autonomic nervous system in chronic conditions like GI issues and fatigue.
How unprocessed stress and trauma may be the missing piece behind stubborn health problems.
What it looks and feels like to truly tune in to your body's messages.
How that attunement builds a two-way trust between you and your body.

The goal isn't to throw out good guidance from practitioners — it's to become the most important voice in your own healing journey.

If your body is sending you signals, are you listening?

Stop Overloading Your Body — Learn to Actually Listen to It
Have you tried elimination diets, supplements, testing, scopes, and still struggle with constipation, bloating, gas, diarrhea, or digestive pain?

In this video, I share the story of a patient who had been through countless interventions but continued to experience frustrating GI symptoms. What ultimately helped him wasn't just food, supplements, or another test—it was understanding the powerful connection between the gut, the nervous system, and mindset.

As an integrative manual physical therapist, I look beyond the digestive system alone. The autonomic nervous system, stress, inflammation, visceral mobility, and even the way we think about our bodies can profoundly impact gut function.

In this discussion, you'll learn:
✔️ Why chronic stress affects digestion
✔️ The connection between the brain, nervous system, and gut
✔️ How visceral manipulation can support digestive health
✔️ The role of inflammation in GI and musculoskeletal symptoms
✔️ Why self-compassion may be one of the most powerful healing tools available

One of the biggest breakthroughs for this patient came when he stopped fighting his body and started supporting it. Sometimes healing begins when we shift from frustration and fear to trust and understanding.

Your body is not working against you—it is constantly communicating with you.
If you've been struggling with digestive issues and feel stuck, this conversation may provide a different perspective on what healing can look like.

The Missing Piece in Gut Healing: Why Your Nervous System Matters More Than You Think
In this video, Jennifer Shepherd, Integrative Manual Physical Therapist, demonstrates a release technique for the pericardium. By engaging both anterior and posterior tissues around the heart and thorax, she works to ease tension patterns that contribute to strain in the chest, cervical spine, and upper neck. This gentle approach helps restore balance, mobility, and release in the surrounding structures.
