Happy New Year!
“How were your holidays?” I was asked often… (and I’m asking you.)
We really had one of the best holidays ever…
I bought special dishes and glasses for our Christmas, New Year’s and family dinners. I pulled out my mom’s old silver. I bought some new furniture (simple Wayfair DIY), blankets and pillows to make our living room cozier. We played pickle ball, went to the movies, played cards and scrabble, enjoyed friends and family, stayed in our PJs until noon. We slept in, read books, went for walks, and to the gym. We planned special meals and special treats. We indulged a bit. We focused on what was most important for us…rest and play, relationships, creating/finding fun.
We rested.
We were unscheduled.
And that was exactly what we needed…
Yes, we all realized we need to back off the indulging of treats, but for the most part, we are all feeling good in our bodies, minds and souls.
As I reflect on my health journey, (and it has been quite a journey!) I am finding my body is able to tolerate more with fewer repercussions. My digestive system doesn’t get as bad as it used to and bounces back quicker. My mood is brighter more consistently (there was a period I was on an anti-depressant). I am learning how to eat to fuel my body and brain and support my metabolism. I know my genetic vulnerabilities and support them by additionally supporting my detoxification, decreasing inflammation, and supplementing. I don’t need nearly the amount of supplements I used to take. I’m stronger and fitter than I’ve ever been. It has taken years of learning, trial and error, practice, healing, and restoration to rebuild my resilience.
But after this holiday season, I am realizing one of the MOST important things I am doing for my health, is making time for rest and play.
I used to push myself until I’d crash and burn, get sick, fall into depression, wrestle with weight, have constant GI issues, cold sores, you name it. Yes, I had some cellular and dietary things I needed to address, but I was not giving my body the rest, peace, and pleasure that it needed to keep my nervous system healthy.
When our nervous systems can spend time in states of calm and restoration the rest of our systems can and will work so much better.
Often that is the “homework” I give my patients…”what can you do today that would be fun?” “what is something that would bring a smile on your face today?” “what does joy feel like?, how could you experience this”
